LOOKING-GLASS HOUSE

Looking-Glass House is an installation in a neglected attic room in Shoreditch Town Hall, London. When I first visited the space, I was intrigued by a large framed mirror that stood in one corner of the room covered in a thick veil of dust, together with a tiny fireplace that seemed out of scale to the rest of the room. Looking-Glass House uses the mirror to reflect a block of text that is suspended diagonally across the space cutting off access to the fireplace. The text can only be read through the mirror as both the actual text and the shadows of the text on the fireplace wall are viewed in reverse. The suspended hand-cut letters sparkle in the blue-green filtered light, and make up a block of text taken from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass. This installation was part of the exhibition Renovate in 1997.
